Up for sale this MAGNIFICENT SILVER PRINT (REAL PHOTOGRAPH) PORTRAIT OF DANCER AND ACTRESS:

LOUISE BROOKS

HERE IS A RARE VINTAGE PRINT OF LOUISE BROOKS BY ALFRED CHENEY JOHNSTON, ca.1924. The size of the photograph is 11" x 14" with 1/2" white borders on double weight glossy photo paper. Stamped on verso with purple stamp stating "Kindly Give Credit to Alfred Cheney Johnston" and black estate stamp. This same image (or slight variation) sold in March 2008 at PROFILES IN HISTORY (see Auction Catalog 31 record on their website and ebay page below) in Los Angeles for $9,500.

PROVENANCE: ACJ estate. Brooks became infamous in the Jazz Age for her sharp wit, raging beauty and outrageous behavior. She and Johnston probably made an interesting pair, since the photographer was also well known for his humor and wit.

This remarkable Johnston photograph was one in a series of Louise Brook's images commissioned by POLICE GAZETTE for their December 13, 1924 cover.

It appears the photographer humorously posed her in a "jailbird" theme. This photograph is reproduced on page 152 in the book "JAZZ AGE BEAUTIES, The Lost Collection of Ziegfeld Photographer Alfred Cheney Johnston."

Condition is Very Good, with slight age wear and thin uneven vintage trim line on right white margin edge. A beautiful print with lovely tones. Please email me if you have any questions.
